Since prototype construction and testing of WindTamer using two and three burner stoves began, many campers have asked for a compact version that will protect and service back pack stoves. It only took a couple of years of head scratching to create one that actually works. Anything developed must be very light-weight, easy to set-up, wind proof, flame retardant, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-mildew, rain and snow proof, affordable, reliable and Made In USA from USA material.
We satisfied all of these requirements.
Back Packer - wind blocker weighs a scant 7.5 ounces, set-up size is 13 inch tall with a flexible width to fit two small stoves : Primus, Jetboil, Snow Peak, MSR, Optimus are good backpack stoves. Stowed away WindTamer is only 13"x 8" x 1/2". A value added extra is the built in lid for those rainy and snowy times that also keeps really strong wind directed away from your hot meal.
Many off road enthusiasts travel on BMW motorcycles or camp in pickup truck roof-top tents and use small camp stoves for cooking. Size does matter. One 8 ounce WindTamer wind cover prevents a lot of expensive cooking heat from blowing away. Saving on stove fuel leaves more space for other motorcycle camping gear.
On the subject of small camp stoves, the above photographs show 2 of my four stoves. I keep a Folgers brand, and a Sierra cup that fits on top of it, in my get home bag. The Sun Vista Pinto Bean stove is a new addition. It is wider and shorter than the Folgers stove. I like it a lot because Jet Boil pans are a great complement. Some fit inside the can's top and others go to the outside. Either way, heat is captured by Jet Boil's proprietary fins.
These stoves are powered by Sterno fuel. I pay roughly $1.75 for each can, by the case. I paid about $1.40 for the Sun Vista stove. The biggedt problem with the Sun Vista is that it came full of pinto beans. 29 ounces of them. So, I chopped up some onion, garlic and fresh Passilla pepper, mixed-em all up and, dang good. No more problem.
Anyway, each Sterno can is rated at 6 hours burn time. It does take a few minutes to boil water though depending on ambiance but I have made hot coffee and oatmeal in about six minutes in the snow. If you are in a big hurry to go no-where on your through hike, maybe this isn't for you.
Jet Boil stoves cost around 50 bucks each, not including the pots and fuel for this type stove gets spendy, really fast. A 4 pack of Gas One Isobutane from Walmart costs $29 and change. With a partial can left over from the last camp-out it is really important to always carry at least one back-up can. The Sterno cans, on the other hand, can be refilled before each journey.
Surprisingly, a Jet Boil stove and a brand new small can of fuel weighs about the same as the Sun Vista and a full can of Sterno and take up the same amount of space. The Sun Vista set-up has additional storage space for 1 1/2 cups of rice though.
